For their 17th annual Hollywood issue, celebrated US glossy Vanity Fair decided to go with the theme "The Young and the Beautiful". Not surprising when you take into account the wealth of new, young talent that has grabbed the headlines and the accolades in what has been an exciting year for Hollywood.
The actors and actresses Vanity Fair has assembled for its hotly anticipated cover are all what the magazine calls "the most exciting actors and actresses of the moment". Taking the lead roles in the front panel (the actual cover of the magazine) are incumbent Oscar hosts James Franco and Anne Hathaway, her Love and Other Drugs co-star Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Reynolds, looking rather broody on his own without the touch of the cover lady.
The fold-out cover also reveals 20-year-old Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence, The Hurt Locker star Anthony Mackie (the lone black actor) and TRON: Legacy babe Olivia Wilde in a barely there gown. Also featured are The Social Network buddies Jesse Eisenberg and Andrew Garfield, Black Swan star Mila Kunis, Inception's Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Rashida Jones (feeding a baby lion!), Garrett Hedlund and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo herself, Swedish actress Noomi Rapace.
And then there's the odd one out - Robert Duvall, who is old enough to be each of his cover co-stars' grandfather, popping up in the background looking sadly out of place. What exactly is he doing there?
And where's the diversity? One black actor and one "international" representative (who is not American, Canadian or British) seems to have filled Vanity Fair's minority quota. Must do better.
Here's a sexy behind-the-scenes look at the cover shoot with interviews with Hollywood's young and beautiful.
* Which other young, hot Hollywood talent do you think is missing from this cover?
