Here it is! The first trailer for a new local comedy called Material, starring Riaad Moosa as an aspiring stand-up comic who has to hide his hobby from his conservative Muslim family.
In Material, South African comic Riaad Moosa plays Cassim Kaif, a young Muslim man who works in his father's fabric shop in Fordsburg, Johannesburg. As the only son, he is expected to take over the family business from his father.
One night, through a series of coincidences, Cassim lands up doing an open mike session at a local comedy club and discovers he has a hidden talent - for comedy. Helping Cassim realise his dream is his best friend and partner-in-crime Yusuf (played by Joey Radien).
But will Cassim's strict but loving father Ebrahim (played by The Kumars at No 42 star Vincent Ebrahim) accept his son's new calling?
The movie offers a hilarious insight into traditional family life in a modern South Africa, while tackling universal issues like identity, responsibility and duty.
Vincent Ebrahim, who was born and raised in South Africa but left for England as a young man to pursue his acting career, gets some of the best lines in the trailer ("Life is not a funny business!"), there's a humorous battle with a yellow VW Beetle jalopy, and if you ever wondered what a Pakistani head massage was, here's your chance to find out.
Material also stars award-winning actress Denise Newman (Shirley Adams, Disgrace), Nic Rabinowitz and Krijay Govender.
It will be released in SA cinemas by Videovision Entertainment on February 17, 2012.
