Winnie: Who should play her?

We take a look at the talented South African actresses who could easily replace Jennifer Hudson in the upcoming movie about the life of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.

Winnie: Who should play her?

News that Jennifer Hudson has been cast in a movie based on the life and struggles of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela has sent up a cloud of controversy, not unlike the life and struggles of Winnie herself.

The movie, entitled Winnie, is set for a 2011 release and is to be directed by South African director Darrell Roodt, whose film Yesterday was nominated for an Academy Award in 2005. This week the Creative Workers' Union of SA (CWUSA) called upon the director to reconsider his casting choice, saying that South African actors were being disrespected by not being considered for the plum role.

We can't say we disagree with CWUSA's viewpoint. Who better to play the ANC stalwart than an actress who has an innate knowledge of the woman and her legacy? Nothing against Jennifer Hudson, though. Her rise from reality show reject to Oscar-winner was one of the sweetest fairytales of the decade, and it is incredibly difficult to fund a film project that doesn't have a star attraction at the top of the bill.

We take a look at a few talented South African ladies we think could easily do the job...

Terry Pheto
The gorgeous Pheto captivated audiences around the world in SA's Oscar-winning crowning achievement Tsotsi. Since then she's found steady work in Catch a Fire and Goodbye Bafana, but she certainly can do better and just needs that one star-making role to make her an automatic choice for filmmakers around the world. That L'Oreal endorsement contract is only going to take her so far.

Leleti Khumalo
One of the most recognisable faces in SA cinema, Leleti has worked with Roodt before, playing an HIV-infected woman left to care for her daughter on her own after her husband dies of Aids. She also impressed in Hotel Rwanda, one of the most acclaimed movies of the decade, opposite Don Cheadle and Joaquin Phoenix. She also has a supporting role in Clint Eastwood's upcoming 1995 Rugby World Cup drama Invictus. But most South Africans still know her as Sarafina. She doesn't really resemble Winnie very closely, but such an accomplished actress should've been at the top of Roodt's casting wishlist.

Vuyelwa Booi
Best known for playing the lovely Alyce on SABC's 7de Laan, Alyce certainly has the look down pat. While most of her work has been on a daytime soapie, the emotional rollercoaster her character has been on over the last year has helped her hone in on her dramatic abilities. She's probably not as well known as some of the other candidates, which counts against her. But nobody knew who the hell Sharlto Copley was a year ago, did they?

Thandiswa Mazwai
The singer has little acting experience, outside of a cameo in Catch a Fire as a funeral singer. But you just can't fake this kind of charisma and magnetism. Anyone who has seen her perform live, or even watched one of her music videos can attest to this. And when has an odd musical casting choice ever hurt? Just look at the multiple-threats posed by Will Smith, Jennifer Lopez, Zola and Cher on the entertainment landscape. The less said about Madonna's acting career, the better.

Honourable mentions:

Sophie Ndaba - Undoubtedly the Queen of South African TV, which just also happens to be her character's name on Generations.

Bonnie Henna - The young actress can next be seen in Invictus, playing Nelson Mandela's estranged daughter Zindzi.

KB Motsilenyane - Another soapie goddess with oodles of charm.

Gugulethu Zuma - Well, why not? With a president father and a cabinet minister mother, the Isidingo actress seems better placed than most to play Winnie.

*Are there any deserving talents that we've overlooked? We want to know what you think!

My Opinion 7/26/2010 8:03 AM
Sindi Dlathu, can also be perfect for this role, she is pretty & extremely talented!!
Miranda 7/22/2010 10:38 AM
Agree with you 100%. @bling. it is a common fact that those who name themselfs after precious things are actually horrible looking, but in your case is must be that you have a horrible brain!
Babongile Xaba 7/22/2010 9:50 AM
I would have opted for Terry Pheto. I mean she is the face of high profile brands such as Lancôme, Ralph Lauren and Maybelline making her an international asset.
lexx74 7/22/2010 9:45 AM
Sorry fellow brothers and sisters, but only jennifer hudson can pull in that box office money!
Plessie Du Toit 6/6/2010 9:44 PM
What everyone seems to be missing here is that actors and films are about making money. For years we've seen the likes of Charlize Theron, Arnold Vosloo, Stelio Savante and now Sharlto Copley (in the A-team) portraying Americans. South Africans portraying Americans, so there's nothing wrong with Americans portraying South Africans. We should be flattered, not bitter.
Seka 2/26/2010 2:29 PM
In addition to my earlier comment, I just wanna say that I bet my whole life that the Americans would never return the same favour we did for them in Invictus and have for example, John Kani (my favourite for a Mandela role), portray the late Martin Luther King in a lead role of a Hollywood movie. Of course the Americans would question that. Please guys, let us be patriotic, these ar historical movies that speak broadly to our hearts. Let us not allow foreigner to strip us off our political dignity. Damn, these Americans can even make a mockery of our National Anthem and walk awy with it.
Seka 2/26/2010 12:32 PM
The trend of South Africans taking a black burner in their own historical movies must come to an end. Some of our actors were victims of the apartheid era paradigm so they should be the first recipients of these lucrative "roles". The Americans on the other hand are only taking these roles for commercial purposes. On the contrary, there is nothing wrong in recruiting foreign actors to feature in our movies, as this consolidates investor relations with other countries. And if South Africa were to completely abolish foreign actors from featuring in our movies, South Africa's credentials as an investor friendly country would be dealt with a major blow. For example, a large percentage of Hollywood actors are foreigners. But the equation must be at least balanced. For example, if there are four lead roles in a local movie, the primary and secondary roles must be portrayed by South Africans and the foreign actors can be slotted in to other roles. So it was absolutely wrong to have Morgan Freeman star as Nelson Mandela and Matt Damon as Francois Pienaar. And get a load of this, even the front cover art of Invictus features only Freeman and Damon as if our actors don't even exist. Cutting to the chase, my favourite actresses for the Winnie Mandela role are Rosie Motene, Motshabi Tyelele and Ntathi Moshesh. Shame on you director Darrell James Roodt for not defending the interests of our home-brewed actors. Kind regards, Seka Samuel Gaula seka.gaula@gmail.com

i think that we have a lot of talent here in mzansi and it is about time we show the world that,i think nthathi moshesh is a perfect candidate for this movie
M.C THUSI 12/14/2009 9:51 AM
my believe is that WINNIE IS OUR MZANSI MOTHER WE NEED SOME ONE FROM MZANSI TO PLAY THE ROLE OF WINNIE WITH NO DOUT OF KERI HUDSON NO FOR HER
Elli 12/13/2009 9:06 AM
The role of Winnie should be left up to the producers and directors. The film industry is a business and affirmative action has no role there. SA wake up and smell the coffee. In any case, an actress worth her salt should be able to master any role and accent.
Sham 12/12/2009 7:21 PM
Besides the movie is gonna bomb anyway.....waste ot money and time
Sham 12/12/2009 7:19 PM
Movies are not just about giving people chances ...it's a business and you pursue the path to maximise profits.Hudson is a brand and will drive the movie to audiences based on the strength of her brand. If you want to promote local talent then put up the money and make your own version...there's nothing stopping you.

For GOD's sake, please'please help promote South African artists. How long will it take to apreciate our talents here...charity begins at home. It's about time we promote our own into international prominence.Thanx!
Nolwazi 12/11/2009 3:42 PM
Ntathi of Scandal shud b offered the role only she can execute it and bring it to life..with absolutly no offence to J Hud but what does she know about our history, culture, past apart from the things she has read & been told about us..let our own sister's bring this role to life, its time the whole world saw our talent SH?T we gave them Charilze Theron didnt we ?
Mabo 12/11/2009 2:55 PM
I think Nthati mosheshe will fit like a glove for this role! she perfect the woman can really act...
danny 12/11/2009 10:42 AM
Woopie Golburg should be a shoo in for this comedy
yeyethu ngoma 12/11/2009 10:34 AM
i certainly think that terry should play her. It has to be someone who WAS gorgeous in her days because Wniza was really beautiful in her 'youth days".(lol). Winnie had a n american accent before 1994 but suddenly changed it to what it is now(hilarious)..the person for the role should be talented, well recognised and beautiful.JENNIFER hUDSON HAS ALL THAT BUT SHE LACKS AFRICANISM,NO ONE WILL DO THE ROLE JUSTICE IF THEY AREN'T FROM sOUTH AFRICA AND THAT'S MY VIEW OF THE WHOLE SITUATION.
B Charlie 12/10/2009 9:30 PM
How about Evita Bezuidenhout. She knows more about Winnie than Winnie herself.
Lisa 12/10/2009 9:25 PM
Who the hell wants to watch a movie about her in the first place????? Forget the whole idea and make a film people want to see.
possum 12/10/2009 9:03 PM
Edward Concar, wow your comments are just what I believe in and what every concerned South African should take note of, however you missed one important thing about the bitch! On National TV she envoked violence by saying "with these matches & necklaces we will liberate this country". Many people died as a result of those words & now some a*sehole wants to blow sugar up her nought thinking she is someone that should be lauded. The actress to play the evil bitch Winnie should be the daughter of the ferryman that plies his trade on the river Styx........pure evil!
Luar 12/10/2009 8:56 PM
Winnie should play herself. She is a good actress. Then we do not have to worry about someone that is not known. Since Stompie Sepei is dead, Julius Malema, though a bit fat and infantile for the role, should play him. Then we do not have to worry about JM also because Winnie would get rid of him.
Di 12/10/2009 6:37 PM
Most of these actresses are far too pretty to play winnie but personally, i will def not be going to see a movie about a criminal
edward concar 12/10/2009 6:33 PM
this shouldn't be too difficult. what u need is a convicted felon, accused of fraud, the murder of a teenage activist(remember Stompie Sepei) and an adulteress. there must be thousands of available south african women who meet the criteria above.why do you think Madiba dumped the bitch and married Graca Machel. He could not afford to be associated with such an "icon" of the struggle
Deric 12/10/2009 6:14 PM
Do we really even care? I certainly don't!
Jailbird 12/10/2009 5:37 PM
There must be many women in Pollsmoor that have the experience to play winnie!
who cares 12/10/2009 4:52 PM
as far as i am concerned a movie about winnie mandela is ludicrous. she should be sitting in prison like the criminal she is. lucky she was married to one of the greatest men on earth that is her only claim to fame
Andrea 12/10/2009 4:43 PM
So to follow the logic of quite a few contributors, only Germans should play Hitler; only Russians should play Peter the Great & only Americans should play Nixon! That's why it's called ACTING people!!
bla bla blaa 12/10/2009 4:26 PM
wu the hell cares wus in the film, the directors can choose wu they want in the film.and its not as if the south african directors came out with the idea of making such a film,so its the rite to do woteva the fuck they want to.its time our people should seriouly grow up...
Whatever 12/10/2009 4:21 PM
Get Julius Malema in drag to play her!
Touch 12/10/2009 4:21 PM
Terry Petho.
p 12/10/2009 4:05 PM
It is not a race issue. She is not someone I would want my grandchildren to make role model. Her track record is not good
chris 12/10/2009 4:00 PM
barbara striesand...
bee 12/10/2009 3:58 PM
i think, this is so ridiculous! who will want to watch a movie of (Winnie) the pooh! come on where is the movie directors? is there nothing else to write about than for us to be put through such utter crao. I WONT WATCH THIS KAK! thank you i rather sit in a corner for the time the movie plays.
Tieho 12/10/2009 3:46 PM
Graca michell seems to be doing a good job-let her continue playing winie!
Alex 12/10/2009 3:32 PM
Put your mouth where your money is.Faki imali o zo bona.
Noni 12/10/2009 2:12 PM
Oh for goodness sake!!! We South Africans are so petty!! When will we all just grow up and realise that its not always about us. Geeez!!!! International film makers have the right to choose whoever they want...if we are so narrow minded as to not see this then Cry Our Beloved Country!
papi 12/10/2009 1:55 PM
@Annies, that was uncalled for,....i think Terry Phetho would be perfect for the role
Jo 12/10/2009 1:45 PM
Who cares - I'll never watch it anyway.
ZonkeM 12/10/2009 1:25 PM
Baby Cele and Vatiswa Ndara would be perfect for this role!!!!!!
isaac maweni 12/10/2009 1:15 PM
I just picked up a comment about the movie Drum on www.imdb.com. Here it is; http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0379765/ I saw this film recently and could not fail to be very badly disappointed. Taye Diggs turns in one of the worst, most arrogant performances I have seen in a long time. He seems to display a total lack of sensitivity for the character and the material. You can almost see the other actors cringe. Why? What was the point in casting an Amrican who can't act to play a South African icon? Did they really think that an actor of his standing could sell this film internationally? It has all the makings of a decent film, but from the script to the casting, every opportunity was thrown away! The setting and photography are good and the music is vibrant." This proves that international stars are no guarantee that a movie will be successful. The failed SA films with international actors include 'Cry the Beloved Country', 'Goodbye Bafana', 'Drum', and others. I say go for Terry.
Dikela 12/10/2009 12:46 PM
I know a lady by the name of Nomonde Maqubela.
zai 12/10/2009 12:34 PM
Is CWUSA funding this film? NOT! Hudson been cast in it to sell it. It will be shown internationally and well known actors and actresses are a draw card not some unknown black women
Black woman 12/10/2009 12:32 PM
Ohhhhhhh please!!!! is this about the race card again? I think both black and white south african are brainless. Really now!! who are we to tell investors who to cast with their money. If I put in millions I should have a say who I want and don't want in the movie. We are such a pethetic nation. I bet few of us actual go to the movie and support african films. If we want to chooice stars then we should be proactive and produce movies. Everytime a local actor is interview and asked who would they love to work with most of the time the answer is some famous american actor or director. For crying LOUD Just stop being a complaining nation.
CALTUS PONDAMARI 12/10/2009 12:26 PM
Terry. Why choose talent from outside when we have our own.
Toy 12/10/2009 12:23 PM
Vatiswa Ndara can play Winnie, case closed
Toy 12/10/2009 12:22 PM
Vatiswa Ndara can play Winnie, case closed
ntotontshoekgolo 12/10/2009 11:58 AM
May someone just tell me what's the matter here? I read some comments about Winnie being a criminal; are these comments relavant to the question asked? I think these drunks are out of order, coming back to the question-I think Pheladi Moganedi can fit well.
Hleli 12/10/2009 11:57 AM
Vathiswa Ndara would be the perfect one for me that is.
Alyce Fan 12/10/2009 11:57 AM
I think Vuyelwe Booi should get the role, I think she is a very professional actress.
skhokho 12/10/2009 11:40 AM
I strongly believe Nthate Moshesh will fit.
nontoko 12/10/2009 11:32 AM
People of SA lets stop looking for the best and leave our south african women behind ,there is alot of women out there who can play this role who had similar problems like winnie, yes all these women mentioned have good talent but lets look for something new with new taste ,and prove to other countries that south africa has talent ,regardless of using the same faces that they have seen before,if the movie has what it takes it should succeed with an unknown face,if tsosti could win an oscar with faces that we did not know so what can stop this movie from doing the same, all you have to do is go out in the township and you definately will find this person thats out there ,waiting to show their talent, lets give everybody a chance producers.all these women mentioned had their chance to show their talent ,lets share this opportunity guys.infact it will succeed more better because everybody will be willing to know what is the new face bringing them.
Realist 12/10/2009 11:18 AM
Rather be worried about whos going to play the part of the small boy stompie she murdered. Her reputation is definetely not worth 5 cent to be put on film. She s a criminal who knows court houses and jails better than her own premises. Ridiculous
V 12/10/2009 11:06 AM
Vadiswa Ndara for me...
BRENDA NDAMSE 12/10/2009 11:06 AM
I really think Vathiswa would play the part perfectly, but if the directors are looking for some young blood TERRY WOULD DO, BUT WINNIE IS XHOSA & MOST OF THEM ARE NOT.
fraud 12/10/2009 11:00 AM
Terry Pheto for me. Reason: she's the only one pretty enough to play Winnie. Winnie was extremely beautiful back in the days. Plus Terry is a good, proven actress.
Sarah M 12/10/2009 10:44 AM
I believe Terry Pheto will make it she's the superstar for the movies we should admit that.
Mohale 12/10/2009 10:43 AM
I think Thandiswa Mazwai could fill that slot perfectly.
Mohale 12/10/2009 10:43 AM
I think Thandiswa Mazwai could fill that slot perfectly.
Kenno 12/10/2009 10:39 AM
Are we saying that only a french person should play Napoleon,or an Italian Mussolini? What about talent? Jennifer Hudson is "bankable" and the movie is surely only being made to make money. What about Peter Stuyvesant to play Stompie...or will all the truth about this criminal be left out???
KillerStone 12/10/2009 10:39 AM
@ roussefe I guess its about time to change that. Africa needs its own stars now. We tired of being depened to people to shine. Why not promote afica and be a force to be reckon.
Ricky C 12/10/2009 10:29 AM
I agree with G , she is a convicted criminal why glorfy her, however I do believe that Julius Melema would make a good stompie......
G 12/10/2009 10:06 AM
Why make an expensive movie about this criminal????
roussefe 12/10/2009 9:50 AM
@ Annies...You are a tool! Did u think about your comment before making? Are you living Lavida Loca? Real SA men, don't say stupid things after drinking pink drinks. Get it right and think before u speak. These ladies are professional actors. They have the ability to ACT!
Virgo 12/10/2009 9:39 AM
Ever thought of Cry Freedom, The Prince of Zumunda and Good Bye Bafana just to mention a few its all about actors who are known world wide.
Thabz 12/10/2009 9:30 AM
ONLY Vatiswa Ndarha can play Winnie. The Metro Fm news reader and Home Affairs actress!!! SHe's brilliant!
KillerStone 12/10/2009 9:28 AM
Good people. Im very much dissapointed in these producers who overlook our own super talented actors and actresses. They only problem these producers have is that they want the ready made. Look at what happened few years ago with Tsotsi. No one knew tosee actors then. So u see they dont believe in them. Comming back to this Mama Winnie issue. I dont have a proble Jenni but my only problem is we need to let these producers that even though as per Bruce (South African. S.A. is less than a pimple on international film industry's backside)we proud and believe in ourselves. Word of advice to these ppl be belittle the ppl of Mzansi they make sure they promote and makert their work. And yes everything would fall into place. You see If you check what Americans do they are not afraid to take chances. Even with Jen she was not known in the last 5 years or so but the producers there were willing to take chance and guess what, today she is a celebrity in her own right. So in short dont overlook the talent Mzansi has. Thanks
P 12/10/2009 9:23 AM
Why are they doing a movie about anyway , will the tyre burning be in the movie.
karin smith 12/10/2009 9:15 AM
I think Vuyelwa would be absolutely perfect for the role.
roussefe 12/10/2009 9:12 AM
Jennifer Hudson has no idea what it's like to be a South African woman. Makes me question the abilities of the producers and the casting directors. How do you tell a story about such an interesting woman, using a tool that has no connection to it. This role obviously needs a lot more than just acting skills. An Oscar winning actress for one movie I am afraid will not be able to achieve this goal
Siindile 12/10/2009 9:11 AM
I believe Bubu Mazibuko will play this part brilliantly. She's one of S.A's best actresses and she does it so well.
Trev 12/10/2009 9:08 AM
Daisy de Melker
Dineo 12/10/2009 9:05 AM
Terry Pheto will do a good job, since she is South African and knows african languages. i have nothing against Jennifer Hudson. We need to realise our ouw talents here in Mzanzi before going outside. We always complain that not enough SA Films are available in the market now we want to produce a SA Film with American actresses? That's not AYOBA. Terry Pheto get my vote 100% and am sure that South African women including Mama Winnie would like that.
Royalty 12/10/2009 8:58 AM
I believe we have not yet even begun to address the talent that we have. Legends like Conny Chiume comes to mind, Warona Seane, Bubu Mazibuko, Baby Cele - we are looking at strength of character and I beleive the ladies above have really earned their stripes and have the maturity to do justice to this role.
Ike Maweni 12/10/2009 8:57 AM
I believe Terry Petho would be the best for this role. As for being bankable, I believe that having tasted success with Tsotsi, many people recognise her and would definitely want to see another sterling performance from the actress. We need to remember that Tsotsi won numerous awards before the Oscar with unknown actors.
wayne 12/10/2009 8:53 AM
Winnie Mandela. And then maybe while she is lighting the necklace the match will slip and she will burn in hell.
Spear_545 12/10/2009 8:43 AM
The producers of the movie while wanting to tell the Winnie Mandela story are in it for the money. This is a business and whatever their financial investment is, they are expecting good returns on that investment. Now to take an actress who is hardly known around the world and plough so much money into this project is a risky business decision because one might lose it all. There are so many good movies that have not received the recognition they deserve because of the cast. However on the other hand should the producers cast a local actress who might not have the international credentials and should the movie become a hit, the investors will make more money as the rates paid to the lead character might not as high as those paid to Jenifer Hudson. It can be done. However to cast a local actress or someone known internationally is business decison to be be by the producers and their investors not by unions and certainly not South Africans. This is not voting neither is it a democracy, its business. My concern is when as a nation we start thinking that the world owes us. The producers have a right to cast whoever they want. After all its their money. Too much politics and labour in business kills the business. Besides we do not want to create a situation where South Africans get discriminated against because because we are busy blocking other nationals from working on anything that has South Africa on it e.g. The Winnie Mandela Movie.
Joseph 12/10/2009 8:26 AM
I think Bubu Mazibuko will be suitable for this part
verni 12/10/2009 8:24 AM
I agree with Chris and Bruce. Its all about money and no-one will watch if its not a recogniseable name especially overseas viewers. We are minute compared to overseas viewing power. Lets not make too much of this and accept that this is how the cookie crumbles.
Miyoba 12/10/2009 8:21 AM
Has to be Nthati Moshesh. Mature and confident, don't look at the pretty faces, acting is from the inner person.
Loti 12/10/2009 8:09 AM
Leleti Khumalo is a brilliant actress and there is no better person to play Winnie, she has the capability of owning a charater in such a unique way it just brings tears to my eyes! although Thandiswa is a close second.
Bruce 12/10/2009 7:52 AM
What a high opinion South Africans have of themselves to think that they have the right to make casting choices based on a film being about a South African. S.A. is less than a pimple on international film industry's backside. I have no doubt the ladies referred to in the article would do stirling work- but would the all-important financial backers of the movie put money into a film starring an unknown? I think not. And what about the international public? I have never heard of any of the actors mentioned, so it's a safe bet that neither have they. I'm equally sure that almost everyone has heard of Jennifer Hudson (and are thus more likely to go see the film). Actors are paid to impersonate characters. In physical terms, all that is required when portraying a real person is a passing resemblance. Actors do large amounts of research, and hire dialogue coaches to get accents as close as posssible. Believe me, no-one in Iowa will care a tinkers cuss wether the accent is 100%. If you are really upset that they're not using a local actor, don't go see the movie. The producers won't care, though, as S.A. is insignificant to the industry. Catch a wake up South Africa- it's not all about you.
JACKY DLAMINI 12/10/2009 7:50 AM
BABY CELE WILL FIT VERY GOOD TO TAKE THE PART OF WINNIE MADIKIZELA MANDELA,
Chris Jones 12/10/2009 7:49 AM
The issue is that the film studio need a recognised name to play Winnie to justify the investment involved in making the movie and while everyone mentioned would do a superb job it is unlikely that they would bring people into cinemas in the USA and Europe which is essential to make the movie a financial success and unfortunately it is all about money.
Thilly Maluleka 12/10/2009 7:42 AM
I believe the role of Winie Madikizela Mandela can be played byTerry Pheto. the reason being, she's got similarities of Winie and as a young actress this will be good chance for her to show Mzansi what she's got. Regards Thilly
OSCAR 12/10/2009 7:42 AM
only Jill Scott is renowned for the part
