Cape Town – The Stephen King film adaption that fans have been waiting for finally hits South African cinemas.

The Dark Tower filmed in part right here in SA stars Idris Elba as Roland Deschain, the gunslinger and Matthew McConaughey plays his nemesis, Walter o'Dim, the Man in Black.

Also showing is a World War II thriller with a slightly different take, a heist flick starring Channing Tatum and Adam Driver as brothers, Brie Larson in a moving drama and Charlie Sheen and Whoopi Goldberg in a 9/11 film.

Here are the 5 new films releasing in SA cinemas:

Movie: The Dark Tower

Our rating: 2/5

Short review: A crushing disappointment from top to bottom, only Elba and McConaughy save The Dark Tower from being among the worst ever Stephen King adaptations.

Movie: Logan Lucky

Our rating: 3/5

Short review: Logan Lucky is totally watchable and really not a flop at all, but I don’t get what all the hype was about.

Movie: The Exception

Our rating: 3/5

Short review: The Exception isn't exceptional but it's a worthwhile mix of star-crossed romance, espionage thriller and strange domestic drama that gives us a slightly different look at World War 2.

Movie: The Glass Castle

Our rating: 3/5

Short review: Any parents of young children — or anyone thinking of hearing the pitter-patter of little feet — are urged to go to their local movie theatre and see The Glass Castle.

Movie: 9/11

Our rating: 2/5

Short review: Presumably honourable intentions never save 9/11 from being one of the most misjudged films of the year.
