Cape Town – A miraculous true life rescue drama, a gruesome Western, a very dirty grandpa, a dystopian tale of survival and an important transgender film – can all be seen at the big screen this weekend.
Here are the 5 new movies releasing in SA cinemas today:
Movie: The Danish Girl
Our rating: 3/5
Short review: The Danish Girl is an important film not only for the LGBTIQ community but heterosexual audiences too.

Movie: Dirty Grandpa
Our rating: 2/5
Short review: Dirty Grandpa is a crude escapade of chaos that will make you laugh but may come across as offensive for sensitive viewers.
Movie: The Hateful Eight
Short review: The Hateful Eight is a decent film with a lot of killing and swearing, but in regards to Tarantino’s repertoire it ranks pretty low on the ‘blow-your-mind’ scale. An average film, but a good average film.
Movie: The 5th Wave
Our rating: 1/5
Short review: I’m not sure what screenplay writers Susannah Grant, Akiva Goldsman and Jeff Pinkner were thinking when they first adapted Rick Yancey’s best-selling novel for the big screen, but what they’ve given us is a watered down and almost censored version of a book, that by all accounts, is one of the best written sci-fi novels for young adults.
Movie: The 33
Short review: It’s really hard not to be moved by this remarkable true story of the 2010 Chilean miners rescue.
