Cape Town – The local skop, skiet and donner flick, Jagveld, opened in South African cinemas on Friday.
The story centres on Emma le Roux a primary school teacher who is on her way home to the family farm in the Great Karoo.
Along the way she crosses paths with Bosman, the mastermind of a drug syndicate and his henchman.
She witnesses the murder of a policeman at their hands. And they see her seeing them. They hunt her down but Emma is the daughter of a Recce who has certain set of skills that they did not expect…
Channel24 found five unknown facts about the local flick that would totally surprise you!
1) A murder weapon found
Writer Deon Meyer found a "murder weapon" in one of the barns on the abandoned farm – It was actually a blade from a farm implement – and decided to add it to the storyline of the movie.
2) A talented tortoise
The tortoise that shares a brief scene with Leandie du Randt Bosch in the film, weirdly took great direction on set during filming. It did everything it was supposed to do without any effort. It made the scene easy and fun to shoot after which the tortoise was returned to the wild. Definitely an Oscar-worthy performance if you ask us!
3) A serious injury
Actor Neels van Jaarsveld was so into character during filming of his final scene that he actually sustained a concussion on set. He had to receive treatment even months after the movie had stopped filming. This wasn’t his first on-set injury – whilst filming The Bang Bang Club the local actor also sustained a serious knee injury which saw him end up in hospital.
4) A special skill
Leandie du Randt Bosch and Tim Theron received martial arts training to make their fight scenes look realistic. Leandie had a stunt-double stand in for her during some scenes, but poor Tim had to bite the bullet and do it all himself. According to Tim he had a few bruises after filming and unfortunately didn’t manage to dodge all of Leandie’s punches.
5) A famous hat
The hat worn by Albert Maritz in Jagveld is basically a celeb in its own right! The exact same hat made an appearance on Theuns Jordaan’s head in the local film, Jakhalsdans, and was also worn by Louw Venter in Die Laaste Tango.
