Action movie shakes CT city centre

Cape Town - The filming of the science fiction film Chronicle caused a big stir in Cape Town on Friday and Saturday.

Explosives were used to blow up cars while actors went flying between buildings in a scene shot in Roggebaai.

A loud bang startled people living in the city on Friday night when two vehicles were blown up in a scene. Bits and pieces of the wreckage of the two vehicles were scattered all over while characters in the film ran in all directions.

Chronicle, a story of three teens who develop superpowers, has been filming in and around Cape Town since the beginning of May.

No South African leads

Over the past weekend, scenes were shot at the Rua Vasco Da Gama square between the Naspers Centre, the Chevron building and the Media City buildings on the Foreshore.

"The cables that were hanging between the buildings were used in a scene where two of the superheroes are playing between the buildings.

"The next scenes will be shot at the Cullinan Hotel and at the Telkom Building in the city centre," an official told Die Burger on Friday.

There are no well-known Hollywood actors in the film, but most of the actors, aside from the four lead roles, are South African.

Dane DeHaan and Ashley Hinshaw have been cast in the lead roles and South African Johnny Breedt, who has worked on films such as Hotel Rwanda and The Last House on the Left, is the art director.

The movie also stars American actors Michael Kelly (who starred opposite Angelina Jolie in Changeling) and Michael B. Jordan (best known for TV roles in Friday Night Lights and The Wire).

Chronicle will be released in cinemas in February 2012.
