Andrew Garfield returning to Spider-Man

Los Angeles - Andrew Garfield has confirmed he will play Spider-Man again.

The actor and Marc Webb, who directed The Amazing Spider-Man, will return to the movie franchise next year, with the planned sequel due for release in May 2014.

Doug Belgrad, president of Columbia Pictures, said: "We could not be more confident in the direction we are taking this new Spider-Man storyline.

"And we are tremendously excited to be ramping up production again with Marc at the helm and Andrew continuing on as Peter Parker.

"We can't wait to share what we have in store for Peter and Spider-Man with audiences worldwide."

Emma Stone - who is Andrew's real-life girlfriend - is still in negotiations about returning to her role as Gwen Stacy.

Transformers and Star Trek writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are penning the script with Jeff Pinker.

The Amazing Spider-Man - which was released five years after Sam Raimi's trilogy of films starring Tobey Maguire as the webslinger - grossed more than $750m at the global box office.
