Avatar sequel to be set underwater

Los Angeles - The Avatar sequel will feature underwater scenes.

The follow-up to James Cameron's 2009 epic fantasy adventure is going to be partly set in planet Pandora's deep oceans in a bid to make the film even more visually arresting, according to producer Jon Landeau.

Speaking at the 2013 NAB Technology Summit on Cinema on Sunday, Landeau teased: "We want to take advantage of the technologies brilliant people are putting out to make the next two movies even more emotionally engaging and visually tantalizing, and to really wrap up the story arc of our two main characters."

He added the filmmakers are also struggling "because [they] can simulate [the environment] visually, but can't simulate it experientially".

Cameron is expected to release the sequel in 2015 and recently said he was busy drafting the scripts for the second and third instalments.

He revealed: "I'm deep into it and I'm living in Pandora right now. There is that start up torque where you feel it's coming to you. Then you build up momentum.

"That's when it gets fun. The characters talk and it's writing itself. I'm almost there right now. It's building fast."

The big-budget sci-fi film - which Cameron began working on in 1994 - became the highest grossing film of all time upon its release, earning more than $2 billion worldwide.
