Barack Obama to honour George Lucas

Washington - Star Wars creator George Lucas is to be among the entertainers and figures from the arts and humanities honoured by US President Barack Obama at the White House next week, the White House said on Wednesday.

Obama is to award the National Medal of Arts and National Humanities Medal on 10 July to two dozen figures from the arts and humanities fields.

Along with Lucas, Obama will honour jazz musician Herb Alpert, opera singer Renee Fleming, Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and screenwriter Tony Kushner, artist Ellsworth Kelly and others with the arts award.

Author Joan Didion, sports commentator Frank Deford and poet Kay Ryan are among those honoured with the humanities medal.
