Los Angeles - Ben Stiller may quit acting to become a full-time director.

The actor-and-director enjoyed making his latest film The Secret Life of Walter Mitty - in which he plays the titular lead character - so much he is contemplating a permanent move behind the camera.

Stiller, 47, hailed the three years he worked on Mitty as an "incredible experience" and "a gift", adding, "As a director I feel much more freedom. There are just so many different kinds of movies that I can make that aren't limited by who I am as an actor."

Directing a back-up when "roles dry up"

The big screen comedian joked he may turn to directing when the acting "roles dry up", and said he could certainly picture himself as a full-time filmmaker.

"I definitely could see myself just directing, for sure. That's where I'd love to end up."

Stiller's previous directing credits include Zoolander, in which he played an egotistical male model, and 2008 comedy Tropic Thunder.

Still popular as an actor

The actor has also entertained millions in hit movies such as There's Something About Mary, the Night at the Museum franchise and the Meet the Parents movies.

Stiller admits he much preferred directing than acting in Tropic Thunder, which co-starred Robert Downey Jr., further hinting at his future plans.

He explained to The Hollywood Reporter, "On Mitty, there weren't a lot of days when I wasn't acting and directing. But on Tropic Thunder the days when I wasn't acting were my favourite days, because I got to just be there and stand behind the monitor and work with the actors."
