Cape Town - Young Cape Town filmmaker Alan Shelley recently beat hundreds of screenwriters and directors in an international short film competition.

The 26-year-old Shelley is now on his way to Los Angeles to film his movie, with Oscar winner Kevin Spacey as part of the cast.

Shelley is one of three winners of an international competition by Trigger Street Productions for young filmmakers from South Africa, USA and Russia. A winner from each country was chosen.

His winning script, Spirit of a Denture, is the story of a hardworking dentist who receives a visit from a pirate.

Guest of honour

After completion, the films will enjoy their premieres in the winners' respective countries (Johannesburg in Shelley's case), attended by Spacey as the guest of honour.

The competition received 276 entries from South Africa. A shortlist was compiled and candidates had to submit additional work to display their creativity and director's talent.

Spacey and Dana Brunetti, a judge and producer of the movie The Social Network, declared Shelley the winner.

Shelley said his first reaction when he heard he won, was shock and then disbelief.
