Cate Blanchett frees dragons in sequel

Los Angeles - Cate Blanchett has joined the voice cast for How to Train Your Dragon 2. The Oscar-winning actress will play a character called Vilka who dedicates her life to rescuing dragons from enslavement in the DreamWorks animation film, which is set for a 2014 release.

The latest addition to the star-studded cast - which also includes Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler, America Ferrera and Kristen Wiig - was announced on Thursday at the first day of the Comic-Con convention in San Diego, California.

Game of Thrones actor Kit Harington - who plays Jon Snow in the smash HBO series - will also make his voice-acting debut as the Dragon Prince, the self-described "greatest dragon trapper in the world".

Comic-Con surprise

Harington surprised fans by making an appearance alongside Dragon director Dean DeBlois at the annual film and comic book conference. DeBlois described Kit's character as "very brazen and cocky" and said he "has an interesting arc in the story".

Blood Diamond actor Djimon Honsou was announced for the voice cast as well after landing the role of Drago Bludvfist, a "maniacal" villain whose mission is to capture and enslave the world's dragons.

How to Train Your Dragon was a major critical and box office success in 2010. In addition to the 2014 sequel, DreamWorks has confirmed a third movie for release in 2016.
