Cavendish Nouveau closing date change error

Cape Town - Ster Kinekor has retracted a statement released on Monday morning that said the closure of the Cavendish Square Nouveau has been brought forward to 13 January.

Initial reports stated that the cinema was due to close on 17 January. Ster Kinekor then on Monday afternoon said that this date (17 January) stands as the final trading day for the Cape Town art cinema complex.

A Ster Kinekor spokesperson said that the incorrect information was released due to an "internal error".

On Friday, Ster Kinekor announced that the Cavendish Square Nouveau cinema will vacate the premises to make way for a new retailer after the mall co-owners opted not to renew their lease.

Cavendish Square is managed by Old Mutual Property.

"The closure of the theatre complex was a decision made by the mall owners who have decided to allocate the space used currently by Cinema Nouveau to an alternative retailer instead," said Fiaz Mahomed, CEO of Ster-Kinekor.

Rumours that the cinema was making way for a Pick n Pay supermarket could not be confirmed.

Ster Kinekor could confirm that the Cavendish Square commercial theatre complex upstairs and the V&A Waterfront Nouveau cinema will remain operational.
