Charlize Theron: SA box office queen

Cape Town - South Africa's golden girl Charlize Theron is still a favourite with local fans as she occupies the top two spots at the SA box office this week.

Charlize's latest film Prometheus has taken the top spot at the SA box office this weekend, taking in an estimated R1.8m in its first weekend of release, according to figures released by Nu Metro.

Pushing its way to No 2 at the local box office is Snow White and the Huntsman, in which Charlize plays the evil queen in an action-packed retelling of the classic fairytale.

Snow White
knocked Men in Black III, last week's No 1, to the third spot to claim No 2 this week. Snow White has earned nearly R5.2m at the box office to date.

The Avengers

However, in three weeks at cinemas, MIB3 has already grossed over R10.5m in South Africa.

Still going strong at No 4 is The Avengers, which has grossed an estimated R35.7m ($4.2m) at the local box office, making up just a fraction of the Marvel movie's massive $1.4bn worldwide haul.

The Avengers is now the third-highest grossing movie of all time, behind James Cameron's two blockbusters Avatar (at No 1) and Titanic.

However, Prometheus and Snow White and the Huntsman are not the only Charlize movies currently on circuit.

The dark comedy Young Adult, which earned Charlize a Golden Globe nomination earlier this year, is still in the Top 20 box office results after nine weeks at cinemas in SA.

Next for Charlize is a return to Africa and the Namibian desert where she will be filming Mad Max: Fury Road, opposite Tom Hardy. Filming is expected to start in July.

New photos have emerged of Charlize sporting a shaved head, which is for her role as Furiosa in Mad Max: Fury Road.
