Director invented Diana movie scenes

London - Oliver Hirschbiegel has admitted some scenes were "invented" for Diana.

The director felt he had to use artistic licence with the story in the new Princess Diana biopic - based on the last two years of the British royal's life - so he could explore her relationship with Hasnat Khan.

Speaking at the world premiere of the film at the Odeon cinema in London's Leicester Square, he told BANG Showbiz: "That's the job of the storyteller, to read between the lines.

"The key is not to speculate, not to come up with stupid clichés. Be honest, be truthful in the way you tell the story.

"Yes, I invented them going to the cliffs of Dover. They never did that. But I felt that I needed to show a scene when you can see how much they enjoy each other."

William & Harry don't need protecting

Hirschbiegel insisted while he is "concerned" with her sons - Princes William and Harry - he doesn't think they need protecting from the movie.

He added: "For centuries they have lived in the limelight. As a father, I am concerned about the children.

"But they are grown-up men. They grew up like that, and know all the details about their mother."

Khan has criticised the film, describing it as gossip and insisting it was based on the accounts of people who didn't know the full story.

However Naomi Watts - who stars as Diana in the movie - defended the nature of the biopic by noting "it's not a documentary".

She claimed: "There are facts that we built things around, but at the same time it's not a documentary.

"It is a piece of story that was worth telling - and we weren't in the room with them, of course. But we tried to be as respectful and mindful as possible."
