Los Angeles - Eddie Murphy is to voice Hong Kong Phooey for a new children's movie.
The comic actor is going to lend his vocal talents to the project which is based on the 70s cartoon of the same name about a normal dog called Penry who is granted the ability to walk upright, talk and is a master of kung fu.
The butt-kicking pooch becomes a crime-fighting superhero who masquerades as a janitor by day.
Live action film
A joint statement released by Alcon Entertainment's Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove said: "We could not be happier that Eddie Murphy will star as Phooey. There is no overstating his contributions to cinema, and to such enduring stars of family entertainments such as Shrek and Dr. Doolittle.
"We look forward to watching him re-imagine yet another classic character."
The film will not be a straightforward animation but a live action film with animated characters in the same style as the recent Yogi Bear.
