First Oz The Great and Powerful trailer

Cape Town - The first trailer for Disney's Wizard of Oz prequel Oz The Great And Powerful has been released, starring James Franco, Michelle Williams and Mila Kunis.

Oz tells the story from the perspective of Oscar Diggs, the would-be Wizard of Oz from L Frank Baum's beloved book, played by James Franco, after he is spirited away to the magical land in a hot air balloon.

The two-minute trailer opens with black and white footage of Oz's origins as a small-time carnival magician who dreams of becoming a great man.

One night he is caught in the eye of a vicious storm in Kansas while travelling in a balloon and lands in the Technicolour magical land of Oz.

He thinks he's hit the jackpot - fame and fortune are his for the taking - that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone's been expecting.

The trailer and new images from the movie were unveiled at Comic-Con in San Diego on Thursday where the cast and director Sam Raimi were in attendance.

"It was wonderful. They (Comic-Con fans) really seemed to like that teaser," said Raimi at Comic-Con. "I was thrilled. I was a little scared going in - they really let you know when they don't like something and when they do and they seemed to really like it so I was really happy."

Oz The Great And Powerful
is set for release in South Africa and the US on 8 March 2013.
