London - Ben Whishaw will play Q in the next James Bond movie Skyfall.
The film's producers Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli have confirmed the British star - best known for roles in Layer Cake and Brideshead Revisited - will be following in the footsteps of actors including John Cleese and Desmond Llewelyn to play the infamous gadget creator.
The pair said: "It's a real thrill to confirm the return of Q in Skyfall played by the enormously talented, Ben Whishaw. We are delighted to have this beloved character back in the series."
Sam Mendes-directed Skyfall sees James Bond - played by Daniel Craig for the third time - tested to the limit when his boss M, played by Dame Judi Dench, finds her past coming back to haunt her, with the spy headquarters in London coming under attack.
Sam recently revealed he wanted to take on the part so he could push Judi's character to the limits.
He said: "I didn't just say yes to doing a Bond movie, I said yes to doing a Bond movie with Daniel Craig. This Bond movie, and Judi Dench. Judi, to me, is one of the great actors of the English-speaking world and so it's a question of, well, a little bit like, what can we give her that will take her to another level we've never seen her before?
"What can we do with her that will surprise or challenge even her?"
