Cape Town - South Africa's golden girl is heading back to the big screen.
After a lengthy break from movies (her last lead role was in 2009 in The Road) Oscar-winner Charlize Theron can soon be seen in three new movies, the first of which is Young Adult, a dark romantic comedy directed by Jason Reitman (Up in the Air).
In Young Adult, Charlize plays Mavis Gary, a recently divorced writer of teen literature who returns to her small Minnesota hometown to relive her glory days and attempt to reclaim her high school sweetheart Buddy Slade, played by Patrick Wilson. Only he's happily married with a new baby on the way and Mavis doesn't quite see that as an obstacle.
Diablo Cody
Mavis, who was the popular girl at her school, reconnects with a former classmate (played by Patton Oswalt) while facing the wrath of other former classmates who always hated her.
The movie marks the second collaboration between screenwriter Diablo Cody, who won an Oscar in 2008 for the Juno screenplay, and Juno director Jason Reitman.
Young Adult will be released in the US on December 9. No date for a South African release has been announced yet.
Charlize will also be seen as the Evil Queen in Snow White and the Huntsman opposite Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth, and the sci-fi flick Prometheus, directed by Ridley Scott. Both films are due for release in June 2012.
