Cape Town - The first trailer for Clint Eastwood directed J. Edgar, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio as FBI founder J. Edgar Hoover has been released.
In this first look at the highly anticipated biopic of one of America’s most revered and controversial historical public figures, Leonardo DiCaprio can be seen altering his image and his voice to portray the character.
The trailer opens with a voice over where DiCaprio’s deeper and huskier than usual voice intones: "When morals decline, and good men do nothing… evil flourishes" as a scene of an explosion in a home unfolds.
Steeped in secrets
"A society unwilling to learn from the past, is doomed," he continues, over clips of the civil rights and war protests. "We must never forget our history. We must never lower our guard."
The script for J. Edgar was written by Dustin Lance Black who penned the Oscar-winning script for another biopic, 2008’s Milk.
J. Edgar Hoover’s life was allegedly steeped in secrets despite his stature. The trailer makes references to Hoover’s "number two man" Clyde Tolson who was rumoured to be his secret lover.
References are also made to the Eleanor Roosevelt "file" which refers to reports that Hoover gathered information on public figures for blackmail purposes.
J. Edgar also stars Josh Lucas, Judi Dench, Naomi Watts, and Ed Westwick.
