Cape Town - Gotham is crumbling. That's the instant impression left by the unnerving new teaser poster for The Dark Knight Rises.
The Dark Knight Rises is director Christopher Nolan's conclusion to his epic take on the Caped Crusader, played by Christian Bale.
The poster features a view of city skyscrapers falling apart while forming the iconic Batman signal in the sky.
As any teaser poster worth its salt, it doesn't really give anything away. The movie's plot details remain a closely guarded secret.
What we do know is that the surviving cast of the previous two movies, Batman Begins and The Dark Knight - Christian Bale, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine - will reprise their roles.
Anne Hathaway joins the movie as Catwoman/Selina Kyle, while Joseph Gordon-Levitt takes on the role of John Blake and Tom Hardy as the villainous Bane.
Oscar-winner Marion Cotillard, who was last seen alongside Gordon-Levitt and Hardy in Nolan's Inception, stars as Miranda Tate, "a Wayne Enterprises board member eager to help a still-grieving Bruce Wayne resume his father's philanthropic endeavors for Gotham".
Warner Bros is expected to release The Dark Knight Rises in July 2012.
