First look: Henry Cavill as Superman

Cape Town - Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Is it the Phantom of the Opera? No, it's just our very first look at the new Superman.

Warner Bros have released the first official image of Brit actor Henry Cavill as Superman in Man of Steel, the latest reboot of the DC Comics superhero directed by Zack Snyder (Sucker Punch, 300).

The movie is currently in production in Chicago and also stars Amy Adams, Kevin Costner, Russell Crowe and Diane Lane. Laurence Fishburne was most recently cast as Clark Kent and Lois Lane's Daily Planet editor Perry White.

The picture doesn't give much away, showing Cavill in full hero mode with his red cape flowing neatly behind him.

Overall the tone of the image is quite muted, with Superman's iconic blue superhero suit dulled down to appear almost black.

The inclusion of what appears to be the mangled wreck of a bank vault (most likely at the hands of Superman himself) perhaps takes the title of the movie a bit too literally. And there's little evidence to suggest whether Superman still prefers wearing his underwear over his costume.

With an estimated budget of $175m, the film is shouldering huge expectations to improve on Bryan Singer's poorly received Superman Returns (2006) and the box office and critical failure of Snyder last movie, Sucker Punch.

Superman: Man of Steel is produced by Inception/The Dark Knight Rises director Christopher Nolan and is set for release in June 2013.
