First look: Neill Blomkamp's Elysium

Cape Town - The first official photograph from District 9 director Neill Blomkamp's latest sci-fi movie Elysium has been released, featuring Matt Damon wielding a massive machine gun.

Elysium is the first film from South African director Blomkamp since the release of District 9 in 2009 and was shot with a reported budget of $100m in various locations around Mexico and Canada.

The image, revealed via The Playlist, shows a bald and buff Matt Damon in what appears to be military uniform and brandishing a weapon with the logo 'ChemRail' emblazoned on the side. He also appears to be wearing a mysterious piece of robotic technology on his trigger arm.

Comic-Con appearance

Much about Elysium has been expertly kept under wraps, with a synopsis released by Sony Pictures in June.

The Elysium plot outline reads: "In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard line government offcial, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn't stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds."

Sony also confirmed that Elysium will feature in an hour-and-a-half presentation at the annual San Diego Comic-Con on 13 July. Audiences will be able to see the first footage at the presentation, which will feature Blomkamp, stars Matt Damon and Jodie Foster and producer Simon Kinberg in attendance.

The movie reunites Blomkamp with his District 9 star, South African actor Sharlto Copley who is part of the cast, though nothing is yet known about the character he plays in the movie.

Elysium also stars Diego Luna, Alice Braga, William Fichtner and Wagner Moura and is due for release on 1 March 2013.
