First look: Star Trek 2 teaser trailer

Cape Town - Fans of JJ Abrams' highly anticipated Star Trek sequel Star Trek Into Darkness finally got a peek into the secretive project as Paramount Pictures released an "announcement video" for the sci-fi epic on Thursday.

The 65-second clip offers a dark look into the world of the film, and features the ominous tones of the new villain, played by British actor Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock, Atonement) and whose identity has been shrouded in secrecy. Though he rumoured to be playing Khan.

The teaser is a preview for a longer 2-minute trailer, which is due to be released next week.

Star Trek Into Darkness will again star Chris Pine as Enterprise captain James T Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Zoe Saldana as Uhuru, Karl Urban as Bones, Simon Pegg as Scotty, Anton Yelchin as Chekov, and John Cho as Sulu.

In addition to Cumberbatch, fellow Brit Alice Eve (She's Out of My League, Men in Black 3) joins the cast as a possible love interest for Kirk.

Paramount Pictures and Bad Robot have kept a very tight lid on details of the Star Trek sequel and offered fans their first official look into what the movie has in store with a teaser poster released on Tuesday.

An official synopsis for the film has also been released:

"In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes Star Trek Into Darkness. When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew."

Star Trek Into Darkness is set for release in the US on 17 May 2013, and South Africa on 19 July.
