First look: The Great Gatsby trailer

Cape Town - The first trailer for Baz Luhrmann’s lavish 3D production of The Great Gatsby, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, has made its online debut.

Based on the classic F Scott Fitzgerald novel, The Great Gatsby tells a tale of passion, obsession and lies set in the roaring 1920s as the US flourished in the years following the end of World War I.

The movie's official synopsis reads: "Nick Carraway, a Midwesterner now living on Long Island, finds himself fascinated by the mysterious past and lavish lifestyle of his neighbour, Jay Gatsby. He is drawn into Gatsby's circle, becoming a witness to obsession and tragedy."

Jay-Z and Kayne West

The movie stars DiCaprio as playboy Jay Gatsby, Tobey Maguire as the story's narrator Nick Carraway and Carey Mulligan as Nick's cousin Daisy Buchanan.

The trailer is rich with Luhrmann's frenetic and decadent cinematic style, complete with infectious party scenes and lavishly recreated period sets and costumes, as the young and rich socialites of Long Island make the most of their youth and beauty.

Most notably, the two-and-a-half minute clip uses music from Jay-Z and Kayne West's 2011 Watch the Throne album (club anthem "No Church in the Wild"), before breaking out into the sounds of U2 (via Jack White).

The movie reunites DiCaprio with Luhrmann who directed him to his breakout performance in Romeo + Juliet in 1996.

The Great Gatsby also stars Australian actors Joel Edgerton (Warrior) and Isla Fisher (Confessions of a Shopaholic) as Tom Buchanan and Myrtle Wilson, Tom's mistress. The movie also marks the Hollywood debut of Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan.

Warner Bros has set the release, in 3D, in the US for 25 December. No official release date for South Africa has been finalised yet.
