Ghostbusters to get female reboot?

Los Angeles  - Ghostbusters bosses are considering rebooting the franchise with a female-led cast.

Sony Pictures were originally happy with a draft for the third movie which had been penned by Tropic Thunder writer Etan Cohen, but have now had second thoughts and have been speaking to Bridesmaids filmmaker Paul Feig about the possibility of him writing, directing and producing a new take on the cult series, The Wrap reports.

According to the website, it is not yet clear what connection the new Ghostbusters movie would have to the first two films, but it is not expected to have the number three in the title.

If Sony do go ahead with Feig's proposals, Melissa McCarthy could be cast in one of the lead roles as she has worked several times with the director, including Bridesmaids, The Heat and his upcoming movie Spy.

And Emma Stone is also believed to be on a casting wishlist as she is a favourite of the studio and has no ties to any rival franchise.

Dan Aykroyd and Ivan Reitman are likely to remain involved in the project as fellow producers but it's unknown whether Aykroyd or fellow ghostbuster Ernie Hudson would appear onscreen.

Aykroyd previously suggested a new Ghostbusters could shoot next spring, but Feig is busy in post-production on Spy so this would be pushed back if he gets the job.

This story would not be complete without the Ghostbusters theme song!
