Globes dispute needs trial - judge

Los Angeles - A federal judge says a jury should decide whether the longtime producer of the Golden Globe Awards had the rights to negotiate a deal keeping the glitzy awards show on NBC through 2018.

US District Judge Valerie Baker Fairbank refused to side with either dick clark productions or the show's organisers, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

Each side had been asking the judge to determine whether agreements between the two entities gave the production company the right to negotiate an extension with NBC.

Her ruling states a disputed 1993 agreement could be interpreted in favour of either side and its meaning should be determined by a jury.

Both sides argued their case during a daylong hearing last week in Los Angeles.

The trial is scheduled to begin August 30.

The awards recognise excellence in film and television, both foreign and domestic.
