The Harry Potter film series had already achieved the distinction of being the top-grossing film franchise of all time, a milestone it reached with the combined success of the first five films.  The movie also opened to record numbers at the US box office, breaking the previous target set by The Dark Knight ($158m) with an incredible $168m opening weekend. Internationally, Deathly Hallows: Part 2 has already grossed $475m in 59 countries since opening on Wednesday (including South Africa). Warner Bros, the studio behind the Harry Potter movies, believes they have a billion-dollar hit on their hands.

"This will be the biggest Harry Potter by far," said Dan Fellman, head of domestic distribution at Warner Bros. "A billion dollars is definitely going to happen."
