Harvey Weinstein casts Meryl Streep in anti-NRA film

Los Angeles - Harvey Weinstein has cast Meryl Streep in anti-gun film The Senator's Wife.

The movie mogul revealed that the Oscar-winning actress - who received a record-breaking 18th nomination for August: Osage County yesterday - is set to star in his new political drama about the National Rifle Association.

The project will be critical of the lobbying organisation which promotes firearm ownership in the United States, with peace-promoter Weinstein hopeful the film will damage the reputation of gun manufacturers.

Speaking on Howard Stern's SiriusXM radio show, he said: "We're going to take this issue head-on, and they're going to wish they weren't alive after I'm done with them. It's going to be like crash and burn."

When Stern queried whether Weinstein had ever owned a gun, the Hollywood producer took the opportunity to further slam the NRA.

He ranted: "I never want to have a gun. I don't think we need guns in this country, and I hate it, and I think the NRA is a disaster area."

There is no director or screenwriter attached to the project as yet.

The news comes after two of Weinstein's films, August: Osage County and Philomena, received Academy Award nominations.
