Idris Elba for James Bond: Talks underway

2012-10-26 12:56
Los Angeles - Idris Elba has been tipped to replace Daniel Craig as James Bond.

The Prometheus actor is in talks with producer Barbara Broccoli to take over from Daniel as the iconic British spy in the future, making him the first black 007 agent to grace the big screen.

New Bond girl Naomie Harris - who plays Eve in the latest chapter Skyfall - said: "I didn't realise that there was this talk and then I did a film with Idris and he said that he met Barbara Broccoli and that it does seem like there is a possibility in the future that there could very well be a black James Bond.

"And I would have to vote for Idris because I just finished working with him and he's a great guy."

'I don't want to be the black James Bond'

Daniel is contracted for two more Bond films, so Idris would take over the role in several years' time, Collider.com is reporting.

The London-born actor rose to fame as drug lord Stringer Bell in TV series The Wire, and was awarded a Golden Globe for his lead role in BBC crime series Luther.

Idris recently revealed that although he was interested in the part, he wants to be remembered for his skills as an actor and not for his skin colour.

He said: "I don't want to be the black James Bond. Sean Connery wasn't the Scottish James Bond, and Daniel Craig wasn't the blue-eyed James Bond, so if I played him, I don't want to be called the black James Bond."

      bashin.monyela - 2012-10-27 21:11

Bond is a fictional character, MLK was a real person, big different

  • vernon.samuel.7 - 2012-10-26 15:16

Ho cares what colour Bond is, as long as he is suave, witty, dare I say sexy and looks as though he could kill you at any moment. Hell, the Bond franchise survived George Lazenby and Timothy Dalton. I doubt that Elba could be as bad as them. I suppose the only time that there should be a legitimate uproar is if they make Bond gay. What is a Bond movie without a Bond girl?

  • Luba Mayekiso - 2012-10-26 15:20

Interesting we are always accused of bringing colour into debates yet all these objections to Idris are purely based on that. Nothing about his acting ability but seeking to protect the colour of a fictional character. Madness I tell you!

  • basil.jacobs1 - 2012-10-26 15:23

I think this whole James Bond thing belongs in the past anyway - passed it's sell by date. Maybe that is why they want to put a new slant on the character, to appeal to a different audience.

  • jacqueline.modise - 2012-10-26 15:39

His British and sexy and that's what matters.

  • jacqueline.modise - 2012-10-26 15:42

Oh his a seriously good actor as well

  • michaeljosephsa - 2012-10-26 16:05

There is no truth to this story. He may have spoken to Barbara Broccoli, but the producers would never discuss a succession while the current actor is still occupying the role (for two more films, no less). Producers also don't sign actors for films that will only be made in six years at a minimum. This story should never have been posted, but then, this is Channel24...
