Cape Town - The timing could not have been better for Marvel, after releasing the much-anticipated threequel Iron Man 3 on the Workers' Day public holiday in SA – and broke records in the process.
Iron Man 3 took in a staggering R 4 169 844 in its first day, knocking off Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Pt 2 as the biggest single day in South Africa’s box office history.
The movie opened in select foreign markets over the weekend and grossed a massive $198.4m – breaking the record previously held by last year’s superhero team-up of a lifetime, Marvel's The Avengers ($185m).
Iron Man 3 looks set to make even bigger business once it opens in the US on 3 May.
The third Iron Man film sees brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark (played by Robert Downey Jr) battling his demons after the devastating events of The Avengers.
When a new villain named Mandarin, played by Ben Kinglsey, attacks his lavish Malibu compound, Tony is forced to survive by his own wits.
Iron Man 3 also stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, and James Badge Dale.
