JJ Abrams takes time with Star Trek 2

Los Angeles - JJ Abrams has entered negotiations for Star Trek 2.

The Super 8 director is beginning work on the script for the sci-fi movie with writers Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof with production likely to start in January and a late 2012 or early 2013 release date expected.

Chris Pine is set to reprise his role as Captain James T Kirk with Zoe Saldana also in line to return to the film as linguistics officer Nyota Uhura, with Simon Pegg signed up to play Montgomery 'Scotty' Scott for the second motion picture.

However, JJ - who recently admitted he does not want to rush Star Trek 2 in order to make it of the highest quality - looks unlikely to be able to complete the film in time for the June 29 2012 release date it is thought Paramount were keen on.

When previously asked about when the film might be released, he said: "I really don't know, we will see. We're working really hard to try and get that movie made as soon as possible but we don't want to rush anything.

"The worst thing we could possibly do would be to put something into production to make a release date instead of a great movie."

The studio is now giving the date to G.I. Joe: Retaliation - a sequel to 2009's G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra, which starred Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Christopher Eccleston, Deadline.com reports.

The forthcoming movie will be directed by Jon M Chu and feature roles for Channing Tatum, Dwayne Johnson and Adrianne Palicki, with Lorenzo di Bonaventura set to produce the motion picture.
