Jake Gyllenhaal for The Bourne Legacy

Los Angeles - Jake Gyllenhaal is being considered for the The Bourne Legacy.

The Love and Other Drugs actor is being lined-up by director Tony Gilroy alongside a host of other high-profile stars for the film, which will see a leading man take on the mantle of Matt Damon's performance as Jason Bourne in the previous three movies.

Josh Hartnett, Garett Hedlund, Alex Pettyfer, Tobey Maguire and Michael Fassbender are also under consideration, with Deadline.com reporting the list will be quickly cut down due to availability issues.

The movie, which is being housed by Universal, is expected to be a sequel to the previous three instalments, but Matt Damon's character will not be involved.

However, the Hollywood hunk is keen to work on the series again in the future in some capacity, but only with original director Paul Greengrass.

He said: "I'd do it again with Paul. Universal doesn't actually own the Bourne character - the estate does - so technically I could go to Warner Bros and Universal could read about it online."
