Jake and Anne's nudity crucial to movie

Los Angeles – Ed Zwick believes nudity was crucial to the story told in Love and Other Drugs.

The director cast Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway in the comedy-drama movie about a pharmaceutical salesman who falls in love with a young Parkinson's Disease sufferer, and is adamant the star pair had to be naked on screen to make their love story believable.

He said: "If I try to imagine this movie without doing that (nudity) I can't. When people are first involved and as into each other as these people are then that bed becomes their world.

"They eat there, they talk there, they sleep there, everything is there.

"Had we done the movie with the sheets pulled up to their necks like Rock Hudson and Doris Day in Pillow Talk it would have been very naff. And these are actors that really are committed to authenticity."

Zwick was delighted to get Gyllenhaal and Hathaway on board for the movie and admits he was nervous the two actors wouldn't be able to commit because of their hectic schedules.

The Blood Diamond filmmaker said: "Scheduling is always an issue because you want the people you want, and because people come into demand it is a real challenge, but I guess it tends to turn out that, if people want to do it enough they find a way to do it."
