James Nesbitt cast in The Hobbit

Los Angeles - Irish actor James Nesbitt has won a part in The Hobbit.

The former Cold Feet actor was originally being lined to play lead role Bilbo Baggins in Peter Jackson’s movie but after that part was given to Martin Freeman, Nesbitt has now signed up to portray Bofur, a dwarf who accompanies Bilbo on his quest.

Talking about Nesbitt’s appointment, Jackson said: "James' charm, warmth and wit are legendary as is his range as an actor in both comedic and dramatic roles. We feel very lucky to be able to welcome him as one of our cast."

As well as Nesbitt, newcomer Adam Brown has won the role of fellow dwarf Ori, with Jackson saying: "Adam is a wonderfully expressive actor and has a unique screen presence. I look forward to seeing him bring Ori to life."

Former EastEnders hunk Robert Kazinsky, Captain America: The First Avenger star Richard Armitage and Being Human actor Aidan Turner have also signed up for roles.

The Hobbit is due to begin filming in February 2011 in New Zealand.
