Los Angeles - Jamie Foxx is to play the lead in new Quentin Tarantino movie Django Unchained.

The Oscar-winning actor will take on the titular character in the spaghetti western, which will also star Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio and Samuel L Jackson, Deadline.com report.

The film is set in Mississippi during slavery which tells the story of slave Django, who's liberated by a German dentist-turned-bounty hunter (Waltz) and taught the tricks of the trade by his mentor.

However, his main goal in life is to recover his wife but needs to get past the villainous ranch owner Calvin Candie (DiCaprio), who runs club Candyland, where his spouse and other female slaves are exploited as sex objects and males are pitted against each other in death matches.
