Jason Statham in talks to star in Parker

Los Angels - Jason Statham is in talks to star in Taylor Hackford's latest movie Parker.

The Expendables star is being lined up to play hardened professional thief Parker who despite killing when he has to, still lives by a code of honour which includes never stealing from people who need it, in the movie adapted from a series of books by Donald Westlake.

Taylor - who most recently directed his wife Helen Mirren and Joe Pesci in Love Ranch will also produce the movie along with Steven Chasman, Les Alexander, Sidney Kimmel and Jonathan Mitchell. Black Swan co-writer John J McLaughlin has written the script.

Stuck

Taylor revealed he is excited to turn the popular book series into a movie - saying: "I don't want to get stuck in a genre. What I like the most about this piece of material is that you can take a genre piece like this and turn it into a great movie."

Jason is currently starring as the voice of Tybalt in Elton John and David Furnish's animated Gnomeo and Juliet and has a number of projects lined up.

He will next star in The Killer Elite and Safe and is expected to start filming The Expendables 2 with Sylvester Stallone in the near future.

He is also thought to be taking on roles in Potsdamer Platz and Pretty, Baby, Machine in 2012.
