Johnny Depp to play Tonto in Lone Ranger

Los Angeles – Johnny Depp is to star in The Lone Ranger.

The Tourist actor will reteam with Gore Verbinski – the director of the first three Pirates of the Caribbean movies – for the project, where he will play the title character's Native American friend Tonto, Disney have confirmed.

It is not currently known who will play the Ranger, originally played by Clayton Moore.

There is also no timescale for the film, although it will be a movie version of the 1950s TV and radio show.

Verbinski and Depp have recently teamed up on the 2011 project Rango, about a pet chameleon who lives in a terrarium.

The 47-year-old actor has a number of projects currently in post-production, including his fourth turn as Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and The Rum Diary, a movie about a journalist working on a newspaper in the Caribbean.

Next year he is expected to film gothic horror movie Dark Horizons.
