Johnny Depp spent £40 000 on coats to keep the Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides crew warm.

The 47-year-old actor splashed out the enormous sum on 500 waterproof hiking jackets costing £80 each for those on the set of the latest action movie, to protect them from the cold weather.

One crew member told The Sun: "Johnny paid out of his own pocket for all 500 of us to have a nice warm waterproof. It's a great morale boost and another example of why he is one of the nicest people in Hollywood."

Filming of the latest Pirates of the Caribbean movie is currently underway at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire in England, where the recent spell of cold weather gave the star the idea of treating his staff.

This is not the first time Johnny has been praised for being kind-hearted during their work in the UK.

Earlier this month, the Hollywood legend made a surprise visit to the Meridian Primary School in south London whilst dressed as his character, Captain Jack Sparrow.

Johnny had received a letter from nine-year-old pupil Beatrice Delap.

She said: "He gave me a hug and he said, 'Maybe we shouldn't mutiny today because there are police outside monitoring me.' "
