Joseph Gordon-Levitt joins Sin City 2

Los Angeles - Joseph Gordon-Levitt has confirmed he will be starring in a Sin City follow-up.

The Dark Knight Rises actor took to his Twitter to announce that he will be taking on the role of Johnny in Robert Rodriguez's film Sin City: A Dame to Kill - a part which was previously offered to star Johnny Depp.

Deadline reports that Joseph's character will be "core" in overlapping storylines that involve original cast members Mickey Rourke, Clive Owen, Bruce Willis and Rosario Dawson.

Newcomers to the feature, based on Frank Miller's graphic novel, include Dennis Haysbert and Gangster Squad star Josh Brolin.

Out of Guardians Of The Galaxy

Joseph's casting in Sin City 2 means that he is out of the running for Marvel's highly anticipated Guardians Of The Galaxy, for which he was targeted to play lead superhero Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord.

Other actors being auditioned for the coveted role include Zachary Levi (Chuck), Jim Sturgess (Across the Universe), Joel Edgerton (Zero Dark Thirty), Jack Huston (Boardwalk Empire) and Lee Pace (Pushing Daisies).

In the meantime Joseph, 31, is set to share his directorial debut Don Jon's Addiction at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah later this year, in which he stars alongside Scarlett Johansson as well as penning the script.

He is also up for the Best Actor in an Action Movie award for his role as Joe in 2012's Looper at the Critics' Choice Movie Awards.

Sin City: A Dame to Kill is rumoured to open in US cinemas on October 2013, with the UK date yet to be announced.
