Martin Freeman prayed on The Hobbit set

Los Angeles - Martin Freeman prayed on the set of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

The 42-year-old actor admits he sought help from above when he was shooting scenes for the sequel, which sees him tumble down a fast-flowing river in barrels because he feared he would get injured.

He said: "That's the week that I prayed.

"Every day before going on set, I would say a quick prayer. There was an element of danger with the barrels even though you are well looked after."

Despite the dangerous scenes, the star - who is married to actress Amanda Abbington - insists he loved filming the messy parts.

Speaking to the Belfast Telegraph, he explained: "It was more fun than it looks. It was highly enjoyable. The doing of all those things is fun.

"I remember that day when we filmed coming up from the toilet - not very glamorous and a bit yucky, but it's all fun. Being covered in fish is disgusting again and kind of fun.

"Spiders were very fun. There's more action and stuff going on. Some of it we shot so long ago that you forget you did it or you think somebody else did it."

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug hits cinemas on 13 December.
