Martin Scorsese to direct biopic of The Ramones

Los Angeles  - Martin Scorsese is to direct a new biopic of iconic punk band The Ramones.

The Oscar award-winning director has been attached to the eagerly-awaited flick, which will tell the fascinating story behind the success of the New York band, who launched their first record in 1976.

Scorsese, 71, is currently focused on directing Silence, a drama that is due for release in 2015.

However, his attention will soon switch to The Ramones biopic, which is still to find a screenwriter.

The ambitious project is being overseen by Jeff Jampol and Dave Frey, who co-manage The Ramones' estate.

Speaking to Billboard about the film, Jampol explained: "Everybody is cooperating and moving in one direction together as a team."

It's been revealed that the upcoming film will feature unseen band footage shot by George Seminara in the 1970s and 1980s, as well as a theatrical play and a book.

Meanwhile, Scorsese has also been linked to the directing role for a new film concerning former boxing champion Mike Tyson.

The film, which is rumoured to be titled Champion, will tell the story of Tyson's troubled life from the age of 20 to the present day, with Jamie Foxx set to play the lead role.
