Los Angeles - Matt Damon is keen to secure the lead role in Legendary Pictures, The Great Wall.
The film, which will explore the mysterious origins of China's historic structure, is to be directed by Zhang Yimou, who made his directorial debut with Red Sorghum, in 1987.
And Deadline reports Damon, 43, is being lined up to play the central character in the film, which Legendary's Thomas Tull - the producer - has been attempting to get made for several years.
Last year, it was reported Ed Zwick was set to direct the film, while Man of Steel actor Henry Cavill was due to play the lead role.

However, it now appears Damon will assume the part, meaning he will have to overcome a packed working schedule in the coming months.
Earlier this month, for instance, it was reported Damon is being lined up to reprise the role of Jason Bourne.
Damon and director Paul Greengrass have entered into discussions with Universal Pictures to reunite for their third movie together in the Bourne franchise, according to Deadline.
Damon's comeback as the character of Jason Bourne is expected to be released on 15 July 2016.
