Mel Gibson working on Jewish film

Los Angeles - Mel Gibson is developing a Jewish movie for Warner Bros.

The Hollywood star - who went on an anti-Semitic rant at police officers after he was arrested in 2006 for driving under the influence - is teaming up with Showgirls writer Joe Eszterhas, who will pen the screenplay, for the project about Jewish warrior Judah Maccabee.

The 55-year-old star - who worked with Warner Bros on Lethal Weapon - is set to have the first option to helm the film when the script has been completed and he has not ruled out appearing in the motion picture, Deadline.com reports.

It will tell the story of Judah, who became known when he - along with his father and four brothers - led a revolt against Greek-Syrian armies who had conquered Judea in the second century BC.

His achievements are now celebrated by Jews all over the world through Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights.

Mel - who was forced to deny 2004 film The Passion of the Christ, which he directed, was anti-Semitic - later apologised for his 2006 rant, explaining it was a "moment of insanity" and a "public humiliation on a global scale."
