Los Angeles - Superstar actresses Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep are to star together for the first time in a mother-daughter role in front of the cameras, according to The Hollywood Reporter Thursday.

Streep, 62 and Roberts, 44, have signed on to star in the film adaptation of Tracy Letts' Pulitzer and Tony-prize winning play August: Osage County, the report said.

Double Oscar winner Streep will play pill-popping matriarch Violet while Roberts plays her rebellious daughter Barbara in the film with shooting set to begin later this year.

"After seeing Meryl Streep's mesmerising portrayal as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady, it has me even more excited and proud to co-star with her," Roberts said in a statement.
