Los Angeles - Michelle Williams will play Glinda the Good Witch in Oz: The Great and Powerful.

The Blue Valentine actress will star alongside James Franco as the titular wizard and Mila Kunis as her sister Theodora in the Sam Raimi-directed project.

The movie tells the tale of a salesman who is blown to the land of Oz in a balloon, where he meets three witches - Glinda, Theodora and the evil Evanora (Rachel Weisz).

Oz helps Glinda fight for control of the kingdom against her two sisters.

Last month it was reported Sam was keen to cast Hilary Swank as one of the main witches in the story, but plans seem to have now been scrapped.

Prequel to a classic

Mitchell Kapner and David Lindsay-Abaire have written the script for the project, which serves as a prequel to 1939's The Wizard of Oz starring Judy Garland.

The Disney-funded project begins shooting in Michigan in July, and currently does not have an expected release date.

Michelle, who first rose to fame on TV show Dawson's Creek, has been nominated for two Oscars in her career and will next be seen as screen icon Marilyn Monroe in My Week with Marilyn.
