Neill Blomkamp's Elysium gets release

Cape Town – South African-born director Neill Blomkamp's much anticipated follow-up to District 9 has a release date: March 8 2013, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

This will coincide with Easter and the spring break holiday in the US.

It is the Canadian-based director's first movie release since 2009's District 9, a science fiction drama set in the slums of Johannesburg which was nominated for four Oscars. Elysium stars Matt Damon, Sharlto Copley (who played Wikus van der Merwe in District 9) and Jodie Foster.

Closely guarded secret

Brazilian actor Wagner Moura has just been added to the cast and is expected to play the villain.

The Elysium plot remains a closely guarded secret – what is known is that it is an action thriller set in a future world determined by social class divides. Damon is expected to play an ex-con in the movie.

In November last year, a mysterious video shot by Blomkamp was released to the iPad version of Wired Magazine, and featured a couple of travellers discovering what appears to be a genetically modified pig-like creature on the side of the road.

Elysium is released by Sony Pictures.
