Cape Town – The much contested biopic about the early life of Nomzamo Winfreda Madikizela and her romance with struggle icon Nelson Mandela has released new images from the movie.
The images show Winnie and Nelson Mandela (played by US actors Jennifer Hudson and Terrence Howard) as a young couple falling in love.
Another picture shows the couple aged, with Howard in heavy prosthetic make-up and a grey wig, depicting Mandela in his later years.
Winnie, directed by South African filmmaker Darrel James Roodt (Yesterday, Number 10), has been met with much opposition from the South African actors' union and Winnie Mandela herself who attempted to halt production of the film. Her discontent stems from the fact that she was not consulted by the producers and she called the movie an "insult".
Winnie has been scheduled to have its world premiere at the 10-day Toronto International Film Festival, which kicks off on September 8.
No word yet on a local release date for Winnie.
