Philip Seymour Hoffman 'looked great' before his death

Los Angeles - Philip Seymour Hoffman was "clean and sober" in the weeks before his death.

The 46-year-old actor was found dead of an apparent drugs overdose in his New York apartment on Sunday and despite previously battling addiction, his friend David  Bar Katz - who called emergency services to the actor - insists he was back to his "old self".

He told the New York Times newspaper: "I saw him last week, and he was clean and sober, his old self. I really thought this chapter was over."

The night before his death, the Doubt star joined two male friends at New York eatery Automatic Slims, where he enjoyed a cheeseburger and a cranberry soda.

According to E! News, the restaurant manager said Philip was a regular at the eatery and "hardly ever drank."

The actor was reportedly found in the bathroom of his apartment in his boxer shorts with a needle sticking out of his left arm.

Police found 10 envelopes nearby, with two of them containing heroin. One had Ace of Spades written on it, and another had an ace of hearts symbol, believed to be heroin branding, TMZ reports.

The alarm was raised at 11.30am after Philip had failed to pick up his children, Tallulah, seven, Cooper, 10, and five-year-old Willa - who he had with partner Mimi O'Donnell - at 9am as had been arranged.
